Non-invasive measurements for characterization of Hermetia Illucens (BSF) life cycle in rearing plant
RGB, thermal, and hyperspectral cameras for contactless monitoring of the Hermetia Illucens larval life cycle in rearing facilities.
Abstract
A study on Black Soldier Flies (BSF), effective in organic-waste treatment and in the production of proteins and oils for feed and biofuels. Since methods for characterizing the larval life cycle directly within production plants are lacking, the work explores non-contact measurements — RGB, thermal, and hyperspectral video — to identify those most significant across the different life-cycle stages and suitable for automation on the production line. The result is a set of criteria based on computer-vision algorithms: an RGB camera to estimate size, weight, and viability in substrate-free stages (pupae); an IR camera to assess viability and temperature anomalies in substrate-based stages (larvae); and a hyperspectral camera to assess larval growth in relation to the chosen diet.
