Optimization of Beam Systems Using QUBO Models and Annealing Techniques
Quantum annealing and simulated annealing for optimizing beams and truss structures, from bridges to space structures.
Abstract
A study of an optimization strategy for beam systems based on quantum and classical heuristic techniques - Quantum Annealing (QA) and Simulated Annealing (SA). The optimization proceeds in two stages: first, the Hamiltonian is minimized with respect to beam displacements to determine equilibrium configurations under external loads; then, cross-sectional areas are iteratively optimized to maximize the system's stiffness while respecting volume constraints. The approach combines quantum-inspired techniques with classical computational methods to efficiently explore the solution space, with preliminary numerical results supporting the proposed method — work that extends the same authors' earlier study on optimizing truss systems with axial-only resistance.
