LIGHTtoLIGHT
Patent for electrically unpowered illuminated signs made with luminescent materials.
Abstract
The LIGHTtoLIGHT project aims to develop a signage device based on luminescent panels. The system enables the creation of illuminated signs, advertising billboards and various signalling applications without the need for electrical power, using phosphorescent or fluorescent materials integrated into the panels.
Project objectives
The main objective of the project is to develop a device that exploits luminescent panels for signage applications, enabling the production of luminous drawings and lettering more visible than ambient light and offering a wide chromatic range through the use of semiconductor nanocrystals, with glass or glass-ceramic panels.
Partnership
The device uses engravings and other methods on panels transparent to visible light, which contain luminescent and phosphorescent materials. Semiconductor nanocrystals, made for example in silicon, enable the production of luminous signs with colours of choice across a wide chromatic range. All drawings and lettering are brighter than ambient light and require no electrical power.
Source of funding
The project was submitted for funding under the "Bando Brevetti+ 2021" scheme.
Expected impacts and results
The project will result in the production of luminous signs and billboards with no electricity consumption, improving the visibility of messages and directions even in conditions of intense light. The use of nanocrystals will allow extensive chromatic customisation, with practical applications in the commercial, advertising and urban signage sectors.
